The Luyas

BY: steev

From Dead Oceans...
Earlier this fall we welcomed The Luyas with open arms, and as promised, the band has completed their Dead Oceans debut. Too Beautiful to Work will be released on February 22 (February 21, in the UK). A picture-perfect collection of echo-drenched space-age pop songs, Too Beautiful to Work buzzes and pops into retro-futurist sonic bliss. From the vintage effects crackling throughout “Tiny Head” to the cerebral repetition found on the title track, the Luyas’ smart, heady pop sounds vital and modern, yet utterly timeless. The band also knows how to write the perfect hook (“Cold Canada”), pairing it with the more cinematic and atmospheric (“Spherical Mattress,” “Worth Mentioning,” “What Mercy Is,”) side of the band’s elaborate vision.

The Luyas are Jessie Stein, Mathieu Charbonneau, Pietro Amatro and Stefan Scheider. They made a record called Too Beautiful to Work at 6 Nassau in Toronto, Ontario, and call Montreal, Quebec home. They play instruments like French horn and keys, guitars and drums. Jessie does the singing. She also plays a Moodswinger which is a twelve string electric zither with an additional third bridge designed by Dutch experimental luthier Yuri Landman. The rod that functions as the third bridge divides the strings into two sections to cause an overtone multiphonic sound. You can read more on this fascinating instrument HERE.

The Luyas enlist the help of many friends on Too Beautiful to Work. These friends happen to double as world-class musicians. (We love Canada!) Owen Pallett plays the violin and arranges the strings. Colin Stetson adds saxophone and clarinet. Sarah Neufeld (who plays in a band called Arcade Fire) also plays violin. John Marshman adds some cello, Daniel Tavis Romano plays the bass, Lisa Chisholm brings the bassoon and Leonie Wall plays the flute. Too Beautiful to Work was recorded by Jeff McMurrich, whose fingerprints can be found on fantastic recordings by Tindersticks, Constantines, Owen Pallett and countless others.

The Luyas’ vision stretches beyond the grooves of their new LP. This is the band that led 50 unsuspecting fans in Brooklyn to a secret location where the band performed alongside a psychedelic lightshow… in a bedroom! The band recently self-funded an elaborate performance at Pop Montreal in which they created a fictional ecosystem using lighting, sculpture, costumes, actors and dancers. The band performed a full set in this labyrinth, creating a truly mystical happening, a one-of-a-kind show. You can catch your first glimpses of The Luyas live in early December as they open a handful of dates for The Antlers and Ra Ra Riot, full dates below.

Only one edit window! How do I create "Read more..."?

BY: Administrator

This is now implemented by inserting a Read more... tag (the button is located below the editor area) a dotted line appears in the edited text showing the split location for the Read more.... A new Plugin takes care of the rest.

It is worth mentioning that this does not have a negative effect on migrated data from older sites. The new implementation is fully backward compatible.
